Soldotna man completes medical school

Scott T. Jensen, son of Jon and Ann Jensen of Soldotna, graduated from the University of Utah Medical School with highest honors May 24. He has been inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical Honor Society, and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He also was advanced in rank to captain in the Air Force just prior to graduation. He plans to do a one-year internship at Sacred Heart in Spokane, Wash., followed by a three-year residency at Standford with aspecialty in anetsthesiology. After his residency, he will serve in the Air Force for four years as compensation for them paying for medical school.

Mayer earns prestigious scholarship

Matthew Mayer of Kenai recently received a Brown Honors Scholarship worth up to $14,000 a year at Boise State University.

The premier academic scholarship for incoming freshman, the Brown Honors Scholarship includes full fees, plus room and board in Boise State's honors residence hall and is renewable for three consecutive years. Recipients are selected based on standardized test scores, high school grades, class rank and extracurricular activities.

Mayer, a 2003 graduate of Kenai Central High School, is the son of Kenneth and Catherine Mayer of Kenai. He also is the recipient of a Homer Electric Association scholarship, a Solid Waste Association of North America scholarship and a John Philip Sousa band award.

Tebughna graduates 2 seniors

Jenna Marie Standifer and Sonny Zaochney graduated from Tebughna School last month. Standifer, who earned a 4.0 grade point average, was selected as valedictorian. She plans to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage and study journalism.

Area students named to deans' lists

Roxane Elizabeth Kotzin of Soldotna was named to the dean's list for the winter term at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. She is a freshman anthropology major. To be named to the dean's list, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.75 on 12 or more graded credits.

Eric Minelga of Soldotna was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. He is a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering. To be named to the dean's list, students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.5.
