Soldotna resident Willie B. "Buddy" Owens died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Soldotna. He was 45.
Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the Sterling Lutheran Church, 35070 McCall Road (off Swanson River Road) in Sterling. Pastor Jim Pearson will officiate. Military honors will be performed by the VFW Post No. 10046 and American Legion Post 20. A gathering will follow the services at 7 p.m. at the Moose Family Lodge in Kenai.
Mr. Owens was born Jan. 10, 1964, to Willie Owens Sr. and Myrtle Willis in Glendora, Calif. When he was young, the family moved to Shelton, Wash., where he was raised and attended high school. He entered the U.S. Navy in January 1982 and was stationed on the U.S.S. Lynde until he was honorably discharged June of 1989. Mr. Owens became a certified EMT in Washington. He then moved to California and worked as a fire inspector for the San Diego Fire Department. He then moved to Arkansas, where he worked as a policeman until he started long-haul trucking.
He continued working as a trucker until an injury disabled him from working.
Mr. Owens moved to Soldotna in November 2008 to be with family and take care of his mother. He was a member of the Moose Family Lodge in Kenai, VFW Post No. 10046 and the ABATE motorcycle club. He loved playing pool, riding motorcycles, fishing and hanging out with family at his "hunting camp."
"He really enjoyed travelling all over with his dog 'Little Girl,' who travelled everywhere with him," his family said.
Mr. Owens is survived by his son, Willie B. Owens III of California; mother, Myrtle Willis of Soldotna; father, Willie Owens Sr. of Shelton; brothers, Danny and Ronnie Owens, both of Washington; sisters, Kay Roberts of Soldotna and Mary Wilson of Arkansas; numerous aunts and uncles; and his companion, Wanda Owens.
