The fire reported Monday at 5:20 p.m. two miles west of Swanson Lake continues to burn, according to officials. Bud Sexton, fire information official, said that the Alaska Division of Forestry and US Department of Fish and Wildlife requested additional firefighters and air support to assist the eight choppers currently fighting the 60-acre fire and received two village crews to assist.
"In these types of situations we need to grid out these large areas to check for potential hot spots, Sexton said.
"There are no structures in the area," he said, of the US Fish and Wildlife Game land currently aflame. "It's all general wilderness."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Sexton said, and all open burn permits have been suspended.
