DELTA JUNCTION (AP) An Eielson Air Force Base man was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoon after his leg was impaled by the handlebar of his four-wheeler.

Alaska State Troopers said Bryan Hughes, 25, was riding the all-terrain vehicle on rough ground on the Tenderfoot Trail off the Richardson Highway.

Hughes crashed at Mile 10 of the trail.

A friend applied pressure to the wound while another rider drove to the trailhead to direct troopers and emergency medical personnel from Delta Junction.

A military helicopter that aids victims of traffic accidents was dispatched and reached Hughes where he crashed.
