Barrel Horse Association holds 1st event

The local district of the National Barrel Horse Association held its first event of the summer on Wednesday at the Soldotna Rodeo Grounds. The association will now be racing every Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the grounds. There is no fee for spectators.

Competitors race for weekly points, year-end awards and jackpot money. The competitions use the 4D format, which involves all levels of racers. The district also has added a senior division this year to join the open and youth divisions. The senior division is for those 50 and up. The youth division is for 18 and under.

Famous volleyball coach comes to Palmer

The Northern Lights Volleyball Club of Palmer is hosting a summer camp featuring the coaching of John Kessel. Kessel has coached volleyball at or above the collegiate level since 1971. He currently works for USA Volleyball and was the team leader for the 2000 USA Olympic beach volleyball teams in Sydney.

The camp willl be July 16 through 20 and will be held at Palmer Middle School. It will have three sessions: one for middle school girls, one for high school girls and one for adults. Due to support from the Mat-Su Health Foundation, camp fees will be $125 for students and $45 for adults. Participants receive a T-shirt and a camp CD created by Kessel.
