Twins swept by Chugiak

Post 20 Peninsula Twins manager Lance Coz could have blamed losing twice to Chugiak Sunday on bad luck, but instead he smartly chose to blame the losses on something the Twins can fix.

After getting thumped 14-7 in the first game at Coral Seymour Memorial Park, the Twins had the winning run at first and the tying run at second in the seventh inning of the second game.

David Newby unleashed a frozen rope to center field, but Chugiak hauled it in with a leaping catch to preserve the 9-8 victory and the American Legion sweep.

"In both ballgames, we had breakdowns in the fundamentals of play," said Coz, whose team dropped to 1-3 on the young season. "In effect, that led to us giving them four outs in some of the innings, and that led to big innings."

In the first game, the first three innings were disastrous for the Twins. Chugiak piled up 13 runs in the first three innings, taking advantage of four Post 20 errors.

The 13 runs were charged to Twins starter Quincy Bird, who took the loss in the game.

David Newby and Nick Weigle each had two hits for the Twins in the opener.

In the second game, the Mustangs took advantage of two errors in the second inning to score four runs and jump to a 5-2 lead on starter and eventual loser Aaron Hughes.

"Our pitching was not as consistent as we'd like it to be," Coz said. "We had too many walks and hit batters."

Coz said his pitchers were instructed to use fastballs because he doesn't want them throwing a lot of offspeed stuff when their arms are not yet in shape.

He said the problem was that the fastballs weren't always under control, and when they did get ground balls, the fielders muffed them all too often.

"I still like how we came back in that second game," Coz said. "That shows we believe we can be competitive with these teams."

The Twins entered the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game trailing 9-5, and managed to push three runs across before Newby's line drive to center field.

Justin Payment had three hits for the Twins in the second game, while Eric Newby, J.D. Pault and Quincy Bird each had two hits.

The Twins will travel to Anchorage for a pair of away series next weekend.
