TALKEETNA (AP) -- A fire damaged a landmark building in Talkeetna early Sunday morning.

Volunteer firefighters were called to the fire at the McKinley Deli on Main Street shortly after midnight Saturday.

Fire Chief Ken Farina said firefighters found the roof of the building in flames. One person inside escaped.

Bystanders aided in moving vehicles out of the way as fire crews hosed down adjacent buildings. Damage to the building, mostly the second story and roof, was extensive, though no exact estimates were available Monday.

The fire is under investigation, Farina said, but appeared to be accidental.

The building has existed on Talkeetna's Main Street for a number of years and once served as a grocery store owned by former Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Dorothy Jones.
