Early reading program available

Parents of incoming kindergartners registered for public schools in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District should watch their mail and e-mail the first week of June for notification of the "Headsprout" program.

Parents should receive information explaining how to get their child started on the Internet-based early reading program. Headsprout is designed to teach kids the fundamentals of reading and may be used over the summer to prepare students for school. Use of the program is provided at no charge by KPBSD.

Masonic golf tourney slated

Kenai Masonic Lodge No. 11 will host its 22 annual open golf tournament June 14 at the Kenai Golf Course. Sponsorships and hole sponsorships are available. Proceeds will benefit the organization's school awards program.

Volleyball garage sale fundraiser slated

The Skyview High School volleyball team is seeking donations for its upcoming garage sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 184 Hillcrest Ave. in Soldotna. The team will pick up items if needed.

Quilting on the Kenai returns

The 15th annual Quilting on the Kenai will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 28 and the gala finale Art-to-Wear Fashion Show at 7 p.m. June 28 at Cook Inlet Academy, 46719 Kalifornsky Beach Road in Soldotna.

The price of admission is $8 per person, with a discount offered for a three-day pass.

Quilters are invited to submit quilts, artistic wearables, quilted dolls and miscellaneous quilted items. Pick-up sites for submissions are Sew'n Be Cozy in Seward, Seams to Be in Homer and Robin Place Fabrics in Soldotna. Quilt registration will take place at Robin Place Fabrics from 2 to 4 p.m. June 14 and from 4 to 6 p.m. June 16.

Library hosts boat raffle

Friends of the Soldotna Joyce Carver Library are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a fully equipped drift boat and trailer, plus other equipment and cash.

Tickets are $100. One thousand tickets are available and may be purchased at River and Sea Marine and Trustworthy Hardware and Fishing in Soldotna.

The drawing will be held at the community picnic during Soldotna Progress Days celebration slated for July 26 and 27. The proceeds will go toward the library expansion project.
