FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A German tourist was killed and his Russian wife was in fair condition at a hospital here after their vehicle rolled several times on the Dalton Highway during the weekend.

Friedrich Thomas Gubefeldt, 44, died after losing control of his sport utility vehicle and rolling it eight- to 10 times on a dirt road at Mile 69 of the Dalton Highway early Saturday, the Alaska State Troopers said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene from head injuries.

His 27-year-old wife, Olga Guessefeldt, was a passenger in the vehicle. She was taken by U.S. Army helicopter to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital where she was being treated for her injuries.

The two were traveling northbound when the accident occurred. Troopers believe it may have been caused by excessive speed. No citations have been issued.

Trooper Sgt. Tim Shoenberg said the couple had driven up from California and were headed for the Arctic Circle when the accident occurred.
