Five anglers took home some cash for their angling effort, taking the prizes for the month of May in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby.
Lavana Contrades of Kauai, Hawaii, earned the top prize of $1,000 with a 197-pound halibut landed on May 21. Sandra Kellar of Flagstaff, Ariz., won the $750 second-place prize with a 185.6-pound fish and Tom Green of Solon, Ohio, won the $500 third prize with a 182.6-pound catch.
Charles Boaze of Soldotna nabbed $250 for fourth place with a 159-pound fish, and Dave Ritchie of Bastrop, Texas, earned $125 for his fifth-place, 150-pound halibut.
Contrades fish still leads the overall derby standings.
Jeff Sauer of North Pole leads in the June monthly standings with a 196.2-pound fish landed on June 2. Jon Blazina of Hibbing, Minn., is in second place with a 148.6-pound fish caught on June 2, and John Campion of Eagan, Minn., caught the 139-pound third-place fish on June 3.
Roger Griffin of International Falls, Minn., is in fourth place with a 123.6-pound fish caught on June 2, and the fifth-place fish for the month of June is still out there, waiting to be caught.
