Nine former members of the Peninsula Oilers were taken in the opening day of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.

In addition, two players slated to be on this year's team were taken.

The former Oilers player selected the highest in Tuesday's 22 rounds of drafting was third baseman Mark Teahen. Teahen, who played third base for the Oilers in the summer of 2001, was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the first round.

"I thought it was a big deal," said Mike Baxter, the baseball operations manager for the Oilers. "I talked to Mark and he thinks he's going to work out a deal with the A's."

Baxter also was pleased with the way the first day of the draft went in regards to holding together this year's team.

Clubs in the Alaska Baseball League can be hurt if a bunch of the players on their potential rosters get drafted, then decide to sign professional contracts instead of spending the summer in Alaska.

The two players drafted Tuesday who are slated to be on this year's club are outfielders Jason Waugh and Justin Sim. Waugh was taken in the 11th round by the Blue Jays, while Justin Sim was tabbed in the 22nd round by the Twins.

"I talked to both guys," Baxter said. "Waugh is still intent on coming. He's coming in late (Wednesday) night.

"Sim is more inclined to sign."

Although Baxter said he was happy with the way the first day of the draft went in regards to this year's club, he knows the 2002 Oilers are not out of the clear yet. The draft continues today and can last up to 50 rounds.

"Sometimes some guys get picked in the way later rounds that you don't expect," Baxter said. "There still could be some surprises out there."
