Homer softball wins state title

The Homer girls softball team won the small-schools state title Saturday at Cartee Fields in Anchorage by defeating Ketchikan 7-2.

Nyssa Baechler allowed just four hits and struck out four in picking up the win for the Mariners, who finished the season with a 22-3 record. On offense, Lauren Bell had two RBIs and Amy Fell scored two runs.

Twins split with Dimond

The American Legion Twins split a doubleheader with Dimond on Sunday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park to run their record to 2-2 overall.

In the first game, the Twins picked up an 11-6 victory. In the second game, Dimond won 18-2 in a game shortened to six innings due to the mercy rule.

Twins coach John Butler said Shawn Isaacs, who started and got the win, made a couple of highlight plays in center field after he passed the ball to relievers.

The Twins collected 12 hits in the game.

“We did swing the bats a lot better than yesterday,” Butler said. “As long as we keep improving, we should be in good shape.”

In the first game, Butler said Luke Oliver, Daniel Hepner and Jordan Waters did a good job in relief.

In the second game, Butler said nothing went right.

“Their very first batter hit a ground ball and the fielder made an error. It got worse from there,” Butler said.

Steve Mabeus took the loss in the game.

“They just lost focus,” Butler said of his team.

The Twins will take on the Peninsula Oilers on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.
