Women go on the defensive

The Kenai Peninsula Chapter of RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) Systems self-defense class to women will be held from 5:15 to 8:30 p.m. today through Friday, and a half day Saturday in the Denali Room of the Central Peninsula Hospital. Nutrition classes available

The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank offers free nutrition classes, “Your Body Works On What You Eat” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays through June 20 at the food bank at 33955 Community College Drive in Soldotna. The classes are taught by Colleen Sonnevil of the Cooperative Extension Service. For more information, call 262-3111.

Alzheimers to be discussed

Frontier Community Services will hold a free presentation on “Staying in Touch: Learning New Ways to Communicate Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai.

Steak dinner fundraiser scheduled

The Sterling Senior Center will hold a steak dinner fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the center. Reservations are required. Admission cost are adults $12.50, children ages 3 to 12 $8 and children under 3 are admitted free. For more information or to make a reservation, call 262-6808.

Quilt show a piece of work

Quilting on the Kenai’s 13th annual Quilt Extravaganza Viewer’s Choice Quilt Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 21 and 22 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 at 46719 Kalifornsky Beach Road in Soldotna. Classes, vendors, demonstrations and more than 100 quilts are some of the planned events and displays.

An Art to Wear fashion show will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 23 at the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska, 9711 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. The grand door prize will be a Pfaff sewing machine.

Summer day camp available in Nikiski

The North Peninsula Recreation Service Area will offer summer day camp for children in grades first through sixth from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, Tuesday through Aug. 2. A variety of activities will be offered including pottery, gym games, cooking, arts and crafts, sports activities and video games.

Community fun run set to start

The Family Fun 5-mile walk/run will be held June 16 at the North Peninsula Recreation facilities. It is open to all age groups. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the race starting at 10 a.m. The fee is $15 per runner and includes a T-shirt. Race fees support the Nikiski High School cross country running team. Everything under the sun fundraiser set

The VFW Post 10046 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold a garage, craft and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 29 and 30 at the post at 134 N. Birch St. in Soldotna. Crafters are welcome. Table rental are available for $20. For more information or to reserve a table call, 262-1262 or 262-2722. Garage sale donations will be accepted until June 26. Proceeds will support youth and community service programs.

Walk for Hope fundraiser planned

Hope Community Resources will hold its third annual Walk and Roll for Hope, a community fun run, walk or rollerblade event at 10 a.m. July 7 at its office at 43337 Kalifornsky Beach Road. Participants may choose to walk a 4-, 6- or 11-mile route down the bike path and returning to the office. Detailed route information is available on the pledge form. Shuttle service is available to pick up any participants at any check station along the route. The money raised in our community will benefit Alaskans around the Kenai Peninsula who experience a developmental disability. For more information, call 260-9469 or download the registration form at
