Juneau teen dies in traffic accident

JUNEAU (AP) -- A 17-year-old Juneau driver died Monday after a one-car rollover south of downtown Juneau.

Mark Willard was pronounced dead at the scene after his 1989 Camaro flipped at 1Mile Thane Road at about 2:20 p.m. Police said Willard suffered head injuries.

Two 16-year-old boys riding in the car were transported by ambulance to Bartlett Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Police said Willard's car failed to negotiate an S-curve. The car hit the shoulder of the road, flipped and landed upside-down in the ditch on the uphill side of the road.

Police said excessive speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident.

The speed limit on Thane Road 40 miles per hour. One passenger told police the car was traveling at about 65 miles per hour.

Willard's body was sent to Anchorage for an autopsy.
