JUNEAU (AP) -- Abandon your junker in Juneau and it'll cost you $295 -- and that's just for starters.
If you plead that you sold the car two weeks ago and just forgot to send the transfer form in to the Department of Motor Vehicles, that'll add another $295. And then you might have to reimburse the city still more money for the cost of removing the car.
''People need to know that doing the right thing is also the right fiscal thing to do,'' Assemblyman Jim Powell said as the Assembly voted unanimously Monday to boost punishment for junk car abandonment.
Powell pushed for a fine of more than $1,000, but the $295 figure was chosen because anything more than $300 is considered worthy of a jury trial and the possible assignment of a public defender, said City Attorney John Corso.
Offenders looking at a $300 fine or less face a single judge and must make their own case or hire their own lawyer.
