Sweeney's Warehouse opens for the summer...

The grand opening of Sweeney’s Warehouse has become like a rite of summer on the Central Peninsula. For the last fifteen years Soldotna’s favorite Irishman has offered blow out prices on some of the most commonly needed Alaskan outdoor apparel at the warehouse behind his Working Man’s Store, “It’s been very successful for us and popular with our customers from all over, we offer close out items, samples, some military surplus and special buys that I can make during the off season along with items we want to move out of the main store. The basics are boots, rain gear and socks, and I like to say the shopping is hot even when the fishing is not,” said Sweeney.

The Warehouse sale use to be marked by the Peninsula’s largest helium ball sailing hundreds of feet above the store. However, the huge ball became just too tempting a target for vandals and after replacing the blimp three times Mike says he has decided to forget about it, “They’re expensive and I spent over $500 dollars just in helium to keep it up during the summer. It was kind of like our summer signature and people enjoyed it, but the last one disappeared in broad daylight during business hours, so I just decided not to replace it again,” he said.

In the beginning the Warehouse sale only lasted six weeks, but it became so popular the second year Mike expanded it to 10 weeks, and ever since then he has kept the Warehouse open all summer, “We’re able to hire extra help for the summer which gives some of our students work all summer long,” added Sweeney. Known as the “Working Man’s store,” Sweeney’s has become a model for the private entrepreneur carving out a niche market and successfully competing with the mega box stores. “I was very interested in specializing in work wear, Carhartt was what the customer wanted so that is what we developed and 18 years ago we opened up as Sweeney’s the working man’s store,” said Sweeney. Mike admits that he is just as interested in the working woman of today and indeed carries sizes to fit the ladies, “The industry is changing and Carhartt is talking about more specialty items for the working gals down the road, but we carry boot sizes for men and women and the kids as well.” Truly the working family’s store you know its summer when Sweeney’s opens the Warehouse in Soldotna.
