No clones here; you're an original

Posted: Friday, June 07, 2002

I propped my eyelids open with toothpicks at 11 p.m. It would not be long before daughter number one would be bringing in her critique of "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones."

Finally, one second before her change-back-into-a-pumpkin curfew, she made her entrance. I started my interrogation with a Botox-free frown. "Who dropped you off?"

After demanding a three-page report of her evening, I lightened up and asked her what she thought of the latest Star Wars movie. She was ready for this and gave it a thumbs-up. Her major criticism was "Who needs to act in a Lucas movie about clones?"

I sent her off to bed with these last words, "Remember, number one, no child of mine is a clone. You, yes you, are an original!" I removed the toothpicks from my eyelids and climbed into bed looking for original sleep, but my mind and spirit were having a relay race.

The Psalmist wrote, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made ... your eyes saw my substance being yet unformed, and in your book they were written" (Psalm 139:14,16). By design we are originals, not dollies manufactured purely for consumption. Some of the reasons we are not clones include:

1. God designed us to be spiritually in tune with him and not to be carnally minded. Some people are afraid to be so heavenly minded and thus be no earthly (carnally) good. I believe that heavenly minded people are incredibly earthly good. We are rich because of the spiritual mindedness of Mother Teresa, Fanny Crosby, Dr. Livingston, Edwards Wesley and Billy Graham. They all had a mind that was set spiritually, and not so much carnally -- so heavenly minded that they were incredibly earthly good.

2. We are not afraid of God's plan. God says he knows the plans he has for us to give us a future and hope (Jeremiah 29:11 New International Version).

If you understand that God has fearfully and wonderfully made you, then you understand that he has a specifically designed plan, an original recipe, with your name on it. Some are afraid of God's plan, saying "I'll look like my grandparents!" But wait, I said, "original!" You may have some preconceived ideas about what yielding to God looks or feels like, but be encouraged. His divine plan for your life is tailor-made and will bring you great joy.

"Delight yourself also in the Lord and he shall give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4). It is God's plan to fulfill those desires which I believe he fearfully and wonderfully put there in the first place.

3. We are not clones because we do not quit. A clone has nothing to live for. An original has a supreme divine plan and purpose, and thus does not quit.

4. We are not clones because we assess how far we have come. God's blueprint for your life is ongoing. Sometimes it's heavy cement work and sometimes it's intricate finish work.

Originals assess how far they have come and recognize God's ongoing work, marveling at the plan. This empowers us not to give up, knowing he who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).

How can I be so sure? Because I am not a cookie cutter clone. I am an original -- who, by the way, is not afraid of the attack of the clones!
