NEW YORK (AP) -- The Episcopal Church's insurance company, considered a leader in increasing awareness of sexual misconduct, has quietly eliminated a training mandate for clients, the denominational newspaper reports.
Beginning in 1994, the Church Insurance Company required four hours of awareness training for dioceses and other church agencies to qualify for liability coverage. But over the past nine months the insurer has gradually removed that mandate, Episcopal Life said.
Rod Webster, the company's general manager, said it dropped the requirement ''in large part because we don't think it's necessary anymore. The church is doing a good job.'' He said he knows of no diocese that has eliminated the training.
The company is shifting liability business to an affiliate, Church Insurance of Vermont, and now plans to reward customers with low misconduct claims by adjusting fees or deductibles.
