Girl missing and feared drowned on Kobuk River

Posted: Thursday, June 07, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A girl from the Interior village of Ruby was missing and feared drowned after a boating accident on the Kobuk River Tuesday night.

Alaska State Troopers said 16-year-old Stephanie Bennis and 18-year-old Aaron Tickett of Shungnak were traveling on the river from Kobuk to Shungnak when their boat struck something in the water.

The two were thrown from the boat. Troopers said neither was wearing a personal flotation device.

Tickett was able to reach a sand bar downriver and made his way to a cabin, where he was able to dry off. He recovered his boat which had drifted to the riverbank and returned to Kobuk to notify the village public safety officer of the accident.

Volunteers from Kobuk, Ambler and Shungnak were searching the river for Bennis.
