While area residents circled the Skyview High School track last weekend with steadfast pace, the efforts of one Kenai senior citizen did not go unnoticed.
Esther Peteet, days from her 97th birthday, walked one lap with her granddaughter during the Kenai Peninsula Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. She said participating was important to her.
"I have had friends who have died of cancer, and I was just interested in doing it," she said.
Peteet participated in the 2000 event with friends and realized she could make a difference. "I thought, 'My gosh, I can do this,'" she said.
Peteet raised more than $300 for the event and has plans to walk in next year's event, as well. "I think it is a wonderful thing, and I would like to see as many people participate as possible." she said.
