Bear hunt successful

Posted: Friday, June 07, 2002

Melinda Webster shot this 6 1/2 foot black bear while hunting across the west side of cook Inlet in Kouktolik Bay May 20. Although Webster has been hunting most of her life, this was her first bear. She stalked the bear within 200 yards and killed it with two shots from her .300 Winchester magnum. The skull measured 18 4/16 inches.

The bear was estimated to be 10 years old. "It was the perfect hunt," said Webster. "We saw 19 bears in a day and a half." Websger was hunting with her fiance Kris Frost and friend Brett Gesh.

Webster lives in the Kenai-Soldotna area. Last fall, Webster shot a 36-inch moose during a hunt at Swan Lake.
