Widower, father of eight, becomes Catholic priest at age 63

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- At 63, Philip Brockmyre has become the oldest man ever ordained a priest in the local Roman Catholic diocese. The widower, who has eight children and 17 grandchildren, is also thought to be the first priest ordained locally after raising a family.

When his wife died of pancreatic cancer in 1998, the former social worker applied to the Rochester, N.Y., diocese, where he lived, but it has an age limit of 50 for seminarians.

Brockmyre studied at Pope John XXIII National Seminary near Boston, which caters to second-career clergy.
