BETHEL (AP) An 11-year-old Bethel girl drowned this past week while swimming in the Johnson River, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Sandra Roehl, who wasn't a good swimmer, went into deep water and was under water for five to ten minutes before she was located, the Nunapitchuk Police Department reported to troopers Wednesday evening.

Rescuers tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation and rushed the girl to the emergency room at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Center. But doctors could not revive her.
