On May 16, there was a successful Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run held in Kenai for the area. The event was well-attended with wheelchairs, bikes and runners. Everyone had an exciting time and the weather was beautiful.
After pre-pledges from athletes, families, friends and law enforcement, plus registration fees, enough money was raised to send the athletes to State Special Olympics in Anchorage on June 12 to participate in basketball and swimming competitions.
The state tournament is a special weekend for the athletes, coaches, leaders and volunteers. They stay in dorms at UAA, compete and have an awards dinner and dance. It gives them a chance to mingle and get to know others from around the state.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the law enforcement officers and firemen who participated. A special thanks to Alex Douthit and Stephanie Crosby for organizing the event. And thanks to the community for their support.
