JUNEAU (AP) -- Jim Nordlund, who served for seven years as director of the state's welfare division, is quitting, the governor's office said Monday.
Nordlund was appointed to head the state Division of Public Assistance by Gov. Tony Knowles. His last day with the agency is June 14.
Deputy Director Chris Ashenbrenner will replace Nordlund, said Jay Livey, commissioner of the Department of Health and Social Services.
Ashenbrenner, 52, has been with the department for 19 years, serving in medical assistance and public assistance, the governor's office said.
Nordlund is a former lawmaker who served in the state House of Representatives as a Democrat from Anchorage from 1993-1994.
