Twins give up double losses to Service

Posted: Monday, June 10, 2002

The American Legion Post 20 Twins lost two close games to Service Sunday in Anchorage. The Cougars won the first game 4-3, and took the second contest 5-4 in extra innings.

In the first game, Service got a run in the first inning, but the Twins rallied back in the fourth with consecutive scores from David Newby, Derek Martin and Kyle Foster. The Cougars scored runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh and held the Twins runless.

In game 2, the Twins got on the scoreboard in the third with runs from Nick Weigle, Zack Hicks, Eric Newby and David Newby. But Service scored in the bottom of the third and in the fourth tied up the game. The game went into an eighth inning where the Twins were unable to push a run across the plate and stranded two runners -- and where the Cougars scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Twins coach Lance Coz said his team recovered well from Saturday's game, making fewer errors in the field. But he said his pitching staff is short-handed.

"We saw gutsy performance on the mound by our pitching staff," Coz said. "We're having to depend on guys to pitch Saturday and Sunday, which is what you prefer not to do."

He said most of the bullpen is experiencing sore arms. Shane Dunn, who started the first game, took a line drive in the pitching arm in the third. Cory Grimm came in to pitch three more innings and Ely Evanson closed.

In the second game, Bud Baun, from Juneau, pitched the entire eight innings. Coz said his pitchers will get stronger, but he wouldn't object to any help.

"If, by chance, two pitchers walked out to the field to join us, we'd welcome them with open arms," he said.

Coz said the Twins had a chance to win both games.

"We were in them all the way," he said. "Sometimes you win the one-run games. Sometimes you lose them."
