BETHEL (AP) A Bethel man sought over the weekend in connection with a break-in and a stabbing apparently killed himself Monday.

Sigurd Hopstad, 20, was found dead at his home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police received a call at 6:25 a.m. Saturday reporting that a Bethel woman had been stabbed with a knife. Police found Stephanie Beal, 20, with multiple stab and cut wounds to her body. She was transported to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital.

Police searched for Hopstad and tracked him to his home Monday.

Bethel police chief Butch Morris said that officers went to the home at approximately 9:15 a.m., and while there, heard a gunshot from inside.

An hour later, police and Alaska State Troopers entered the home and found Hopstad dead.

The body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Anchorage.
