Seward resident Gilbert Nelson died Sunday, May 27, 2007, in Seward. He was 56.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 2 at the Seward American Legion Hall. The Rev. Lee Houston officiated. Mr. Nelson’s ashes will be spread over Resurrection Bay at a later date. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Nedwick, Bob Richey, Steve Nicholas, Ronnie Broughton and Dennis Esaacson.
Mr. Nelson was born Oct. 3, 1950, in Seward to Gilbert O. and Margaret Nelson. He graduated from Seward High School in 1968 from AVTEC in welding, master and mate license and business and office technology. He commercial fished on crab and scallop boats from 1968 to 1982 and was a longshoreman with ILWU Union from 1984 until his death. He married Maranda Nelson in February 1999 in Seward. Mr. Nelson was a member of Northern Stevedoring Unit No. 60 in Seward.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of Seward; sister, Virginia Cuffe and her husband, Michael Cuffe of Ninilchik; brothers, David Nelson of Seward and Donald Nelson of Soldotna; nephew, Brendan Cuffe of Ninilchik; nieces, Danielle Barrett and Melissa Nelson of Anchorage; uncle, Howard Clifford of Massachusetts; in-laws, the Broughton family of Seward and the Nicholas family of Cantwell; stepdaughter Iris Barrier of Fairbanks; and stepson Jack Barrier of Anchorage.
