School district appreciates HEA work during year of storms

Posted: Wednesday, June 11, 2003

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District would like to send out a special thank you to the Homer Electric Association. Throughout the 2002-03 school year, our peninsula communities experienced several storms resulting in power outages. In each of these cases, HEA moved quickly to ensure that our school buildings' power was back up and running. By doing so, our schools were able to stay on schedule and provide a warm and safe place for our students. In several cases, our peninsula schools were turned into Red Cross shelters, which also served the needs of our community members at large.

During the Region III basketball tournament this past winter in Homer, we once again had a main storm, which resulted in power outages throughout the peninsula. HEA contacted the school district requesting information to ensure that Homer High School had electrical power to provide heat and lighting not only to people attending the tournament, but for all residents in the area needing shelter. Homer High School was able to continue to put on a first-class tournament and meet the needs of our visiting guests, which included friends from Kodiak and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and our neighbors.

Thanks again HEA for all you do for all of us on the Kenai Peninsula.

Todd Syverson,, Assistant superintendent, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District
