Halibut derby gets new leader

Leroy Miller of Fruitland, Idaho, is the new Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby leader after landing a 240.6-pound fish Thursday while fishing with North Country Charters.

Miller also leads the June monthly standings with his catch. Davis Eschberger of Taylor, Texas, is second in the monthly standings for his 227.2-pound fish, also landed Thursday while fishing with Falcon Charters. Vickie Thompson of Ester is third in the monthly standings with a 199.6-pounder caught on June 7 with Alaska Adventure Charters.

Denny Runyon and Don Berg, both of Bonney Lake, Wash., are fourth and fifth after a trip with Spirit Charters on June 5. Runyon's fish weighed in at 187.8 pounds while Berg hooked a 174.6-pound fish.

No tagged fish have been caught in this year's derby, and six anglers have entered the released fish drawing.
