ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Crews were working Monday to clean up a diesel fuel spill in the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island.
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said more than 200 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled from a leaking pipe at the Savoonga post office. The spill was discovered Friday afternoon. It was not known how long the fuel was leaking.
DEC officials said about 70 gallons of fuel had been recovered and placed in drums. Crews have been removing contaminated snow and placing it in a lined, bermed containment area.
