ANCHORAGE (AP) -- About 1,000 gallons of heating oil was spilled Tuesday at Portage Creek, a village of about 36 people 29 miles southeast of Dillingham on the Nushagak River.
The Department of Environmental Conservation said the spill occurred when a Portage Creek Native Village Council fuel tank was overfilled.
State Department of Transportation personnel discovered the spill early Tuesday afternoon.
Two earthen berms were constructed to stop fuel oil from moving downhill. Personnel on the scene said most of the oil had been absorbed by the ground.
Portage Creek, for which the community is named, is about 350 yards from the spill.
A DEC responder is to travel to the spill site Wednesday to determine additional cleanup plans.
