Posted: Thursday, June 13, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The captain of a cargo vessel pleaded guilty Wednesday to obstructing a Coast Guard investigation into illegal discharges of oily waste from the ship in February.

Doo Hyun Kim, captain of the Khana, admitted that he instructed crew members not to reveal to investigators that a hose had been used to discharge oily bilge water and sludge.

The plea is the third in the last three weeks as part of the federal government's investigation into four vessels' inspected in Dutch Harbor. All four ships are believed to have been chartered by a Korean company, Oswego Ltd., and manned by Boyang Maritime Kyeong Deep Sea Fisheries Co.

Kim will be sentenced in August.
