Anchorage Assembly creates new tolerance committee

Posted: Thursday, June 13, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Anchorage Assembly has mandated that a new city panel be established to battle intolerance and discrimination in Anchorage.

''People say it is a friendly little town but underneath that veneer of cordiality there is some mean stuff happening here,'' said Assemblyman Allan Tesche.

The panel will be established within the city's existing Equal Rights Commission.

It will be called the Standing Committee on the Promotion of Tolerance and Diversity and will have several tasks. Those include serving as an information clearinghouse, hearing and addressing public concerns regarding racial and ethnic issues, developing programs to increase appreciation of diversity, and recommending policies to the Assembly and the mayor.
