FAIRBANKS (AP) The University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday hired a former assistant coach as its new head women's basketball coach.

Lynne Andrew will begin work about July 7, said UAF athletic director Cory Schwartz.

Andrew has been the assistant women's basketball coach at Division I universities Idaho State, Weber State and Montana State and Division II North Dakota.

Andrew received her master's degree in athletic administration from Idaho State and her bachelor's in physical education from Montana State.

As a player at Montana State, Andrew was named Big Sky First Team All-Conference in 1987 and 1988. She also spent a season in Europe with the West Germany Professional Basketball League 1989-1990.

The search for a new women's basketball coach began in March when Jenny Benson resigned after nine years as head coach of the Nanooks.
