Nevada angler takes halibut derby lead

Mark Leseberg of Boulder City, Nev., moved into the top spot of the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby with a 241.6-pound catch landed Wednesday, displacing the former leader by 1.4 pounds.

Leseberg and his wife were out on an overnight trip to Afognak Island with Capt. Tony DeMichele aboard the Sea Otter II. DeMichele had the boat headed back to Homer without much in the way of luck when they decided to give it one more try near the Barren Islands.

Leseberg's wife had the first big bite, but the fish was either too big or too fast and broke the line. Leseberg's nibble came shortly after.

The jackpot goes to the angler who catches the biggest fish during the derby, which runs through September. Last year's winner pocketed $48,675. Prizes also are awarded for the five biggest fish in each month of the derby. Information is available from the Homer Chamber of Commerce at 235-7740.
