Homer chamber mixer today

KBBI AM 890 public radio station will host the Homer Chamber of Commerce mixer at 5:30 p.m. today at its studio on Kachemak Way, behind Ptarmigan Arts. Activities for the evening will include live music, studio tours, demonstrations, door prizes and refreshments. KBBI also will introduce its new digital project. Blood Bank of Alaska in critical need of donors

The Blood Bank of Alaska is in critical need of all blood types, due to expiration dates and the unpredictable usage trends.

It will hold a blood drive at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Blazy Mall in Soldotna. Residents who donate a pint of blood can enter to win a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River. Those wishing to donate are asked to eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before coming in. For more information about the contest or the blood drive, call Goldie at 260-5672.

Golf tourney to benefit firefighters association

The Kenai Firefighters Association will host its 13th annual golf tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Kenai Golf Course. Fees are $75 for individuals and $300 for teams. Proceeds will help support the various programs the association sponsors. For more information, call 283-4557.

Kenai Watershed to host river festival

The 13th annual Kenai River Festival, sponsored by the Kenai Watershed Forum, will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the city of Kenai's Green Strip Park near the ball fields. A variety of free activities are planned, including face painting, a hands-on science tent, live music and fishing-casting clinics. Sterling seniors plan barbecue

The Sterling Senior Center's annual barbecue fund-raiser will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the center at Mile 82.5 of the Sterling Highway. Entertainment and door prizes are planned for the evening. The cost for dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 12 or $30 for a family (limited to two adults and four children.) New swim session to begin Monday

The Soldotna swimming pool has openings for its summer swimming schedule. The session will include 10, 40-minute lessons for skill levels two through five, or 10, 30-minute lessons for skill level one. Session three (for all skill levels) will only have nine lessons due to the July 4 holiday. Session two runs Monday through June 27; session three (nine lessons) runs June 30 through July 11; session four runs July 14-25; and session five runs July 28 through Aug. 8. The cost for lessons is $40. Preregistration is recommended.

The Soldotna pool also offers parent-taught classes for parents with children under age 3. These are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 2 p.m. There are four lessons for a cost of $20. For more information on lessons or a complete list of what the pool has to offer, call 262-7419.

Deadline for subsistence comments looming

The United Fishermen of Alaska's Subsistence Outreach program reminds residents that written public comments on the 40 federal subsistence proposals are due at the office of Subsistence Management by the end of the business day Monday. Comments can be e-mailed to; faxed to (907) 786-3898 or mailed to Federal Subsistence Board, attn. Bill Knauer, OSM, 3601 C St., Suite 1030, Anchorage, AK 99503.

Hospital to offer safe sitter courses

Central Peninsula General Hospital will offer Safe Sitter classes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 23 and 24 at the hospital. Children must be at least 11.

A $50 per student fee will cover all course materials. Class size is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call Michelle McKay at 262-8172.

Swim team looking for new members

The Silver Salmon swim team will hold tryouts throughout the month of June at 9:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Soldotna pool. Team members need to be at least age 6. The team will learn how to backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and swim freestyle. There are opportunities to compete against other teams, swim in relays and win ribbons. Mount Marathon race helpers needed
