Posted: Tuesday, June 13, 2006

The Southern California Running Birds defeated the Oilers 5-4 in 10 innings Monday to saddle the Peninsula side with its first loss of the season.

The Oilers, now 3-1 overall, will play the Running Birds tonight at 7 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

The Oilers jumped to a 4-0 lead in the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Chance Gerloff and Kip Masuda scored on a single by Jordan Opdyke, David Newby scored on an error by the third baseman, and Opdyke scored on a double by Daniel Boyle.

The Running Birds pitchers shut the Oilers down after that. Peninsula had one hit after the first inning, with starter Andre Esquibel pitching six innings, winner Bryan Duffey pitching three innings and Tony Perez pitching one inning to earn the save.

The Oilers were plagued by four errors as Southern California chipped away at the lead. Just two of the Running Birds’ five runs were earned.

Southern California scored single runs in the second, third, sixth, eighth and 10th innings for the win.

Kevin Matsumoto took the loss for the Oilers, giving up one earned run in two innings pitched.
