Posted: Friday, June 13, 2008

Sunshine, blue skies and beautiful green fairways! What more could a person want to enjoy on a great afternoon with friends?

Hello and welcome once again to the Bird Homestead Golf Course weekly report. Just 11.8 miles out Funny River Road will find you in some of the most beautiful country that Alaska has to offer, and smack dab in the middle is the jewel of Funny River. 260-4653 will get you all the information you may need.

The course is in great shape, the greens are in better shape than they were at the close of season last year and all of the improvements that have been happening are looking fantastic. Come on out and see for yourself. There are great deals to be had. Don't forget Thrifty Thursdays! Bring a friend and they golf free -- can't beat a deal like that. Weekly events happening all the time!

This past Tuesday found 12 men out to see who would take home the bragging rights this week. Teams were drawn and even though it was a bit windy and a tad bit cold (brrrrrrr), they were off and jogging (just to keep warm). With three teams of four, the first-place team ended up consisting of Paul Zimmerman, James Musgrove, Rich Haller and Dick Galloway. Long drive went to Paul Zimmerman with Dennis Linnell taking home the pot for closest to on No. 8. Closest to on No. 6 is a carry-over. 6:30 p.m. tee time on Tuesday evenings will find you in great company. Call to find out more information at 260-GOLF.

The first tournament of the season is the Annual Ray Husby Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic, otherwise known as The Moose Tourney! Folks, this is a great cause, with proceeds going to scholarships for high school students to help further their schooling. A young mind is a terrible thing to waste. So, help out by joining in the tournament or becoming a sponsor for this cause on Saturday with a tee time at 9 a.m. Lots of prizes being awarded -- a hole-in-one included in the lot. This course is playing so well this year a hole-in-one is very possible. Come on out and be the first one to accomplish this feat here. There's great company and great food, as well as the famous pig roast to follow play. If you want to reserve a riding cart for this event you need to call as carts are limited. More information can be obtained by calling the clubhouse at 260-4653 or coming out to the clubhouse.

Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. -- yes 10 a.m. -- is the Over the Hill Gang morning. Come on out and show off your talents and take home the prize for our senior league.

The next tournament will be the Association String Tournament on June 29 and I will send out more information next week on that one. This is also a fun one with kind of a string twist to it.

Come on out and enjoy the water driving range and see if you can clear the pond. We would love to see you, so come as a guest and leave as a friend. Until next week, keep it in the fairways, I'll see you on the greens.
