DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. says it will cut its North American production in the third quarter by 10 percent from the same period last year as its sales slow.
Ford sales are down 12.8 percent so far this year. The No. 2 automaker says it will build 930,000 vehicles in July-September, compared with 1.04 million in the third quarter of 2000.
Planned car production is down 19 percent to 310,000, while planned truck production is down 4.9 percent to 620,000.
''It's a fairly cautious forecast,'' analyst David Healy of Burnham Securities told The Detroit News in Wednesday's editions.
Ford did not say if the cuts would require any temporary layoffs or plant closings.
Earlier, industry leader General Motors Corp. said its third-quarter production would fall 6.4 percent to 1.24 million vehicles.
