Burn permit suspension back in effect today

Posted: Thursday, June 14, 2001

Strong winds and drying conditions are forecast to return to the Kenai Peninsula today, prompting fire officials to suspend all burn permits effective this morning. The ban applies to all permits issued by the Division of Forestry and area fire departments.

Cooking and warming fires do not require permits, but are regulated by strict guidelines: They may not be burned during windy conditions; they must be located in dirt areas, away from vegetation; water for extinguishing them must be on site; burn barrels must be covered by a metal screen; and they must be attended to until they are out.
