Oilers escape again vs. Victory Dons

It may not have been pretty, but the Peninsula Oilers were happy to pick up another win Wednesday night at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

After letting a 7-4 lead slip away in the top of the ninth inning, the Oilers came back in the bottom of the inning with the game-winning run to defeat the Ukiah Victory Dons of California 8-7 in a non-league game.

"Definitely any way we can get them," said Oilers third baseman Mark Teahen of the way the team has managed to string together a 5-2 record while waiting for several more players, particularly some pitchers, to arrive in town.

The Oilers have been doing it with the bats in the two games against the Victory Dons, and Teahen provided the heroics in the bottom of the ninth in Wednesday's game.

With runners on first and second and two out, Teahen drilled a ball past the dive of the Ukiah shortstop.

Anticipating that the Oilers runner on second, Jeff Dragicevich, would be waved home on a ball hit out of the infield, Ukiah left fielder Dan Young put a hard charge on the ball.

The Ukiah shortstop, Sal DeAnda, got just enough of his glove on the ball to deflect it out of Young's path, and Dragicevich scored to end the game.

"He just told me what pitches (Ukiah pitcher Andrew Vasquez) had, and to take the first pitch and just get a look," Teahen said of the brief conference he had with Oilers head coach Brian Green before stepping into the batter's box. "He had that big loopy curve, and that's what I ended up hitting."

Teahen got the chance to face Vasquez after Dragicevich drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a ground out by Brian Horwitz.

The Victory Dons gave Oilers leadoff hitter Bobby Spano an intentional pass to create a force situation in the field, but Teahen made sure the plan backfired.

Throughout the game, the Oilers offense took advantage of scoring opportunities when they presented themselves. Luke Simmons drove in a pair of runs with his double to right field in the first inning after Spano and Teahen reached on a leadoff walk and a dropped third strike, respectively.

Simmons reached on a bunt single to lead off the third inning, advanced on a single by Trey Hendricks, stole third and scored on a ground out to second by Wilton Reynolds.

The Oilers added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dragicevich hit a double to right-center field, scoring Hendricks and Reynolds, then he advanced on a single by Horwitz and scored on a wild pitch. Horwitz followed him home, crossing the plate on a hard ground ball by Teahen.

Oilers starting pitcher Nelson Lopez, working on a pitch count, held the Victory Dons to two runs, one of them earned, on four hits in five innings of work. He struck out two batters and did not issue a walk.

Joey Newby came on in the sixth inning in relief, surrendering a run after Ukiah's Anthony Gonzales tripled in the sixth inning, then gave up another run in the seventh when the Victory Dons loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Ukiah pushed the run across with a sacrifice fly.

Newby retired the side in order in the eighth, and had two outs in the ninth before running into trouble. After a fielder's choice and a base on balls, Pat Breen's double scored two runs and Gonzales then scored Breen with a single that tied the game.

Hendricks faced one batter and notched a strikeout to end the Ukiah rally, picking up the win when the Oilers scored in the bottom of the ninth.

Simmons was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs for the Oilers, and Dragicevich went 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBIs.
