Since February Kenai Central High School senior Elena Bird has been the reigning Alaska Junior Miss. The last five months have been a whirlwind of essay writing, paperwork, shopping, scrapbook making, and community service all in preparation for next weeks national Junior Miss Competition in Mobile, Alabama. She has sung the National Anthem at community events more times than she can count and recently returned from a trip to California where she focused on elements of poise, posture, interviews and fine tuning her vocal talent for her big week in Alabama. "I've been told that it's not worth doing unless you're willing to give it your all, so that's what I've been doing, working hard, and I'm ready to go thanks to my family, coaches like Mary Green and Reann Pitts, and angelic supporters like Alaska Wedding Brokers in Sterling who have helped me a lot with my wardrobe," said Bird in a final interview before departing for Mobile.
The Junior Miss National Competition will be televised over PAX TV, a satellite station, Monday, June 27th at 9:00pm EST. The broadcast will be delayed and Bird will be home in Alaska and able to enjoy her triumphal experience with family and friends herself. For her talent Alaska's Junior Miss will be singing an Italian aria by Puccini, where a lady is singing to her ex-lover, "I'll be utilizing a lot of talents in my performance as well as polishing my Italian so I'm really looking forward to performing it on national TV, it'll be a lot of fun," laughed Elena.
