East sweeps Twins

The American Legion Twins were swept by East on Sunday in a doubleheader in Anchorage. The Twins lost the seven-inning games 6-5 and 14-8 to fall to 3-3 in the league and 4-8 overall.

In the first game, the Twins came back from a 4-2 deficit and grabbed a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning. East rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Twins pitcher DJ Stilchen walked a batter, then hit two batters, to give the Thunderbirds the victory.

"It was a heartbreaker," Twins manager John Butler said. "The coaching staff has to take a lot of the blame. DJ was up there with 90 pitches. He was tired and we left him in."

For the Twins on offense, Mitchell Thompson was 2-for-4, Josiah Covey was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Ethan Oliver was 2-for-3 and Braden Price was 1-for-3 with three stolen bases.

In the second game, the Thunderbirds grabbed a 9-3 lead after two innings en route to victory.

"Our pitching has got to get better and our defense has to make routine plays," Butler said. "We didn't do that today."

Butler said the positive side of the game was that the Twins did not give up after falling behind. Braden Price finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two triples, while his brother Westen Price was 3-for-3. Covey also went 3-for-4.

The Twins stay on the road to face Wasilla in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
