ANCHORAGE (AP) A 16-year-old Eagle River girl is dead after apparently taking an illegal drug that wasn't made properly, according to Anchorage police.

Meghan R. Maroney was found dead inside a Spenard apartment Thursday morning. Police said it appears she died after voluntarily taking a dose of the illegal drug GHB.

The drug is one of the substances referred to as a date-rape drug, but the girl and a 23-year-old man, Matt O'Connor, both apparently took the drug voluntarily, according to police, O'Connor was recovering at an Anchorage hospital Friday, according to KTUU-TV.

GHB acts as a depressant of the central nervous system. It is a liquid that is frequently mixed with alcohol.

Police say there were five people at the Spenard apartment where the girl was found. No charges had been filed Friday.
