On May 17, my daughter Heather was hit by a car in Kenai, suffering severe head injuries and a broken leg. This event is certainly the most horrible thing that has ever happened in my life every parent's nightmare. But in the aftermath of this tragedy I have been blessed to see the best that people are capable of, and realized that Heather and I have many more friends than I ever thought we did. I would like to thank them all. A special thanks to Becky Jackson, Dr. Thiel and others who were first on the scene at the accident and whose immediate attention and skills saved Heather's life.
A benefit was held June 8 for Heather. I would like to thank Marilyn Wheeless, Barbara Waters and other members of the Kenai Writers' Group; Jay Barrett, for organizing this event; and the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center for holding it. A special thanks to the musicians who gave their time to perform for the benefit, and all those who read. Many thanks to everyone who attended, donated funds or auction items, or otherwise helped to make this event an awesome success too many names to mention.
Many thanks, too, to everyone who has prayed for Heather. Know that you are all in our hearts and have helped make a difference to us in this time of hardship. I have certainly been shown that we live in the best place on earth, among the best people.
