Oilers hold off fast-closing Monarchs: Peninsula leaves 13 runners on base, but Corrales slams door in 8th, 9th innings

Posted: Tuesday, June 16, 2009

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Lake Erie Monarchs 3-2 on Monday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai in nonleague action.

The Oilers improve to 2-1 overall, while the Monarchs fall to 2-3 on their trip through Alaska. The Oilers host the Monarchs tonight and Wednesday at 7 p.m. before opening up Alaska Baseball League play Friday at 2 p.m. in Anchorage against the Glacier Pilots.

The Oilers left 13 runners on base against the Monarchs, going just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Not making the most of scoring opportunities almost cost the Oilers when the Monarchs' offense found life late in the game.

In the eighth inning, Nick Loredo entered for the Oilers and gave up a one-out double. After striking out the next batter, the next three batters singled to score one run and load the bases. An error scored a run and made the score 3-2 before Josh Corrales relieved Loredo.

Corrales preserved the lead by getting a pop-out to end the inning, but the Monarchs would test him again in the ninth inning.

After a leadoff single, Corrales struck out the next two batters, but then a wild pitch put the tying run on second. Corrales ended the threat with a third strikeout in the inning.

The Oilers got on the board in the first inning when Kawika Emsley-Pai walked with two outs and the bases loaded. Joe Kohan then grounded out to leave the bases loaded.

In the fourth inning, Shayne Wilson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run. Caleb Bushyhead had the Oilers' final RBI in the fifth inning.

Chris Ellison was 3-for-3 for the Oilers, while Michael Miller and Wilson each had two hits.

Jacob Anderson picked up the win for the Oilers by tossing two scoreless innings. Scott Snodgress had two scoreless innings, while Mike Ratigan had three scoreless innings.
