Oilers even up Alaska Baseball League series with Anchorage

Boze blows by Glacier Pilots

Posted: Sunday, June 17, 2001

The Peninsula Oilers learned from Friday night's struggles against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, rebounding from the 9-2 loss to beat the visiting Pilots 5-1 Saturday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The rubber match of the three-games series is scheduled for today at 1 p.m.

Marshall Boze turned in another solid performance Saturday, throwing a complete game to earn the win for the Oilers. Boze certainly didn't overpower the Glacier Pilots -- he struck out just one batter -- but he kept the Peninsula defense busy with 17 fly-ball outs and eight ground-ball outs, all of which the Oilers handled without committing an error.

"It's not very hard," Oilers catcher Creighton Kahoalii said of playing with Boze. "He knows how to battle. He came out and played hard. It's good inspiration for us."

Boze allowed one run on nine hits and walked one batter.

Kahoalii, meanwhile, had a breakthrough night at the plate with a single, a triple and a pair of sacrifice bunts hitting from the No. 9 spot in the Oilers batting order. He drove in three runs for the Oilers.

Oilers head coach Brian Green was happy to see Kahoalii swinging the bat well.

"He was a little down on himself, but he came out here and he executed on the sac bunts when we asked him to," Green said.

Kahoalii's triple to left field in the seventh inning landed just shy of the wall at Coral Seymour Memorial Park, and might have carried out of any other Alaska League park.

"I'll take the triple," Kahoalii said. "At first I thought the left fielder might run it down, but it got by him and kept going.

"I've been struggling offensively, and I just needed to relax and swing the bat and just try to get a hit. It's a mental approach rather than a physical one for me."

Kahoalii's triple plated Jeff Dragicevich, who had led off the inning with a walk, and Matt Cunningham, who had drawn a base on balls. Trey Hendricks' sacrifice bunt put the runners at second and third, setting the table for Kahoalii.

The Oilers scored their first run of the game in the second inning when Cunningham hit a leadoff double, advanced on a single to right field by Hendricks and scored on Kahoalii's base hit.

The Oilers scored two more runs in the sixth inning when Hendricks led off with a single and took second on Kahoalii's sacrifice bunt.

Oilers leadoff hitter Brian Horwitz stroked a double to right to score Hendricks. After a single by Mark Teahen and a walk to Luke Simmons, Horwitz scored when Glacier Pilots shortstop Jose Ortega couldn't come up with a hard ground ball off the bat of Jamie D'Antona.

The Glacier Pilots notched their only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single by Sergio Garcia, but Kahoalii's triple in the bottom of the seventh gave the Oilers their final margin of victory.

Green had no idea when the last time Boze threw a complete nine-inning game would have been, but he was grateful for the effort.

"After the eighth, I said, 'Marshall, we've got to get you out of there,'" Green said. "He said, 'You've let me go this far, I might as well finish it off for you.'

"We're just fortunate to have him out here. The kids learn what it's like to be a grinder."

Brian Montalbo took the loss for the Glacier Pilots, giving up one run on six hits in four innings of work.

Simmons went 2-for-3 for the Oilers while Hendricks was 3-for-4 for the evening.

On Friday, the Oilers gave up six unearned runs to the Glacier Pilots in their Alaska Baseball League opener.

Oilers starter Juan Serrato was victimized for five unearned runs in his six innings of work, taking the loss. Serrato allowed three hits, walked six batters and struck out four.

The Oilers had a particularly rough go of it in the field in the top of the third inning, when the Glacier Pilots were able to plate four runs on one hit and the Peninsula defense was charged with four errors.

"We learned that everybody in this league is good, and you've got to have your A game every night," Green said of Friday's game.

The Oilers scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning when Teahen singled, advanced on a walk to Simmons and scored on a two-out double by Reynolds.

Horwitz scored the Oilers' second run in the bottom of the fifth inning when he singled, stole second, took third on a balk by the pitcher and scored on a ground ball by Teahen.

Nic Puckett came on in relief of Serrato, giving up three runs, two of them earned, on four hits and four walks. Puckett struck out three batters in four innings of work.
