Seward fisherman dies from injuries after fishing boat accident

Posted: Monday, June 17, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A Seward fisherman died Friday from injuries sustained in an accident aboard a commercial fishing vessel in Prince William Sound.

Family members identified the man as Jonathan Perry, 46.

Coast Guard officials said Perry was fishing Thursday aboard the vessel Angjenl when he got caught in a line and pulled into a davit, a crane-like piece of equipment used to lift objects on board.

A paramedic aboard the vessel Halberg responded to the crew's call for help. The Coast Guard sent a helicopter that was training in the Homer area, but a private floatplane arrived on scene first and flew the victim to Cordova before he was flown to Anchorage.

Perry was then flown to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage where he died.

It was the third commercial fishing death reported in Alaska this year.
