Peninsula Oilers roughed up

Posted: Monday, June 17, 2002

Almost as soon as it began, it seemed it was over.

After striking out the Ukiah (Calif.) Victory Dons' lead-off batter in the top of the first inning, it was all downhill for the Peninsula Oilers. The Dons scored six runs in the first half inning of the game and went through their lineup and one Oiler pitcher -- Mike Davern -- before the Oilers came to the plate. The Dons won 12-5, taking two out of the three-game series against the Oilers Sunday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

Davern got himself into a pickle early, collecting an unearned run as the result of a fouled exchange between himself and catcher Garrett Schoenberger.

With bases loaded, Davern tossed a fastball low and away from both Schoenberger and Dons batter Chris Hanson. John Restrepo, who found himself in scoring position after a triple to deep right-center field, logged Ukiah's first run, capitalizing off Davern's wild pitch. Tony Calderon scored a second run when Schoenberger fumbled a ball three pitches later.

Four more runs came in before Tony Postlewait could relieve Davern to end the top of the first.

But the Peninsula team was not without its bright spots. Second-baseman Rusty Beale scored a run in the bottom of the first on a Preston Griffin sacrifice fly to right field. Chris Graziano helped chip away at the Ukiah lead with a second-inning run off an Andy Schutzenhofer sacrifice to center field.

Perhaps the stand-out performance for the day came from catcher Blake Jones, who stood in at first base for what he called "the first time in a long time."

He said he wasn't nervous about getting the call.

"I just didn't think about it," he said. "It's been a while, but it felt O.K."

Blake recorded two RBIs on the day -- during a crucial point in the game when the light of salvation seemed to be more than a flicker for the Oilers.

Down 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Jones muscled a screamer down the third-base line and into deep left field to send Schutzenhofer home from his perch 90 feet from home plate. Hitting behind Jones, Schoenberger batted in Adrian Schau. Jones came up again in the eighth inning for Oilers' final score, batting in Schau on a double to left field. Jones said he'd been in a bit of a hitting slump and it felt good to be out of it.

"I hit (well) the first couple of games, and then I wasn't doing so well," he said. "I was glad I got those hits."

A Dons rally in the top of the ninth all but sealed the game, as four of the first five Ukiah batters scored -- powered by a Chris Hanson RBI and a three-run homer from catcher Michael Besolo.

Oilers manager Brian Green went through four pitchers, including assistant coach Damian Stambersky, through the course of the game. He said he was trying to preserve arms through this final non-Alaska Baseball League game to make the most of his bullpen for today's league game against the Athletes In Action at 7 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Field.

"With the league starting tomorrow, we weren't interested in points," he said. "We were more concerned with execution. In the ABL, five runs will win you most games."
